Roche Healthcare

“Building trust, confidence and collaboration between HCPs and Patients using technology to educate, inspire and instigate change. We aim to improve lives through the empowerment of HCPs by providing compelling solutions for effective and efficient treatments.“

Overview

The idea of this project was to improve the learning material for users of Roche Pharmas' OCREVUS a medication for Multiple Sclerosis. Roche team had approached us to provide a digital solution that would help them convert their document/paper based material to digital format that is like a library or videos that would help users access it from anywhere. Our team went a step further to conceptualise a better solution than the traditional media formats and use an emerging technology to better equip the users with their learning and patient management process from any location of their choice.

The Challenge

In retrospect the main challenge was to bring Roche Pharma management and employees to come to terms with the use of an emerging technology like AR to materialise their requirement. The traditional nature and working style of the management made it rather difficult to convince them of using a new technology for one of their more successful products which had a rather steep learning curve to be able to use.

The management was bent on using tried & tested digital formats such as ebooks and interactive videos to convert their existing material. The team although open to the idea were very skeptical toward the idea of Augmented Reality as they feared that this would double the difficulty in the training as the customer would need to learn the technology first before learning OCREVUS infusion.

The Approach

Our team decided to tackle the issue with some demonstrations and product experience workshops. The intention is to bring awareness to the team about Augmented Reality and to show the ease with which users can access the training material using this technology. Following that we strived to simplify the educational material in a way that the future users learning curve would be very simple.

The Solution
When we introduced the idea of completely rethinking the idea of how training is provided and came up with an emerging technology as the way forward it was taken with multiple reactions, to some it was a good idea and to others breaking away from the norm would make the learning more difficult and time consuming than it is now.

Simplify the concept: We started off by simplifying the concept of Augmented Reality. The first step was to bring the technology to the most accessible format to the user. From thinking about wearable devices to handheld our research brought us to using the mobile for the final device as it is the easiest to access for everyone. This was our first win with the stakeholders.

"The concept and idea of completely rethinking the way training is provided is a great approach to solve problems faced in healthcare as well as other industries that have complex training materials"

Following that the team introduced an idea to reduce the content all the available material from documents and books to a few most important aspects and the remaining as a library.

Workshops: Next we brought the Roche team to our teams workspace and introduced them to existing solutions and more complex solutions that have been simplified with a few workshops. The initial workshops consisted of co-ideating on how Augmented reality is versatile and how the technology can be integrated to our everyday life within devices we use everyday . Then we showcased some examples of how AR is more interactive and rewarding to the user than the traditional digital video format which helps users retain memory of the training material. Roche management and research team were intrigued to see how easily accessible the technology was and how easy it is to integrate into daily life.

 User Journey

Further more we conducted workshops with the actual users with the management viewing the recordings of these, they were surprised to see how well the users responded to the the new technology and how it introduced a WOW factor into the training. Users were also able to remember the process steps a lot better than video or ebooks.

Materialisation: We then proceeded to convert some of the important aspects of the training into the digital format. With the help of some members of the Roche R&D team we conducted a process walkthrough of how OCREVUS was administered and what were the blockades the users faced during the process. We also conducted several sessions with users to understand what they found difficult, relevant and irrelevant. With the help of this information the team was able to prepare insights to provide the management a wholistic view of the technology and how it would simplify and reduce burden on the users.

"The training tool has helped nurses understand the process with ease and are able to administer without fear..."

Test and Rollout: The OCREVUS administration is a very complex process that has to be monitored in a timely manner and Augmented reality may seem to be something out of a sci-fi movie. Shadowing a nurse who administers OCREVUS and the ability to access AR with a handheld personal device was the two things that helped simplify the whole process and implementation of the idea. We built a simple prototype which functioned similar to the final product, within this we added all the relevant steps of the process and some material that would be an add on to support the product.
